As photography grew popular as a means of documenting reality in the late 19th century, painting moved away from its original role and began to search for new expressive possibilities. Rather than faithfully reproducing outward appearances, there was a strong tendency among painters to emphasize subjectivity and sensitivity, and an impetus toward exploration based on the artist’s personal interests in drawing, color, and composition. In portraits depicting the subject’s character and social standing, painters strove to do more than simply reproduce physical appearances through the use of unrestrained shapes and bold colors. While vividly portraying the model’s interior state, emotions, and personality, painters went so far as to pursue the potential of the forms themselves.

At the same time, the photographic medium was not solely limited to the attribute of objective documentation. In this exhibition, we introduce works from a wide range of eras that deal with the theme of people, ranging from Impressionist paintings to newly acquired works of contemporary art. We hope that you will enjoy viewing these rich and attractive artistic expressions that capture the human figure.
